As highlighted on this site, the importance of a diabetes health care team, committed and co-ordinated, cannot be over-emphasized.
The CDE manages a comprehensive network of various healthcare professionals, with the aim to ensure diabetes care excellence. The CDE network includes Specialist Endocrinologists, Physicians, General Practitioners, Diabetes Educators, Nurses, Podiatrists, Dieticians, Pharmacists, Ophthalmologists, Opticians, and Biokineticists. Each of these healthcare professionals perform unique and vital services within the CDE programmes of care.
Importantly, quality needs to be assured, and the first step towards diabetes care quality is to ensure appropriate training, up-skilling and accreditation of healthcare professionals.
The CDE is at the forefront of diabetes training for healthcare professionals – over the last 20 years, more than 5 000 healthcare practitioners, from South Africa and beyond, have received CDE training.
The CDE doctor network is unique. Within the same group, specialist endocrinologists, physicians and General Practitioners all participate. This creates unique and value-adding opportunities for both mentoring and support, as well as appropriate patient referrals where indicated.
The CDE doctor network has 5 distinct levels of accreditation, and doctors can progress across these accreditation levels, based on their level of qualification and diabetes up-skilling.
